  • Member of the Advisory Board of the Missouri Publishers’ Association since 2006, responsible for oversight of The Columbia Missourian, the newspaper of the University of Missouri’s Journalism School, including active engagement over the recent budget debates and business models reviews.
  • Member of the advisory board (since 2001) of The Health Promotions Advisory Committee, National Home Office, American Cancer Society, providing advice on internet publishing initiatives including advisory services for Cancer.org and all patient’s information delivery vehicles.

Past Positions

  • Founder and member of the Board of Directors of the Online News Association (ONA) until 2006, chair of nominating and student and educator committees. The association was founded in 1999 by the editors of leading online news sites in the belief that the Internet is the most powerful communications medium to arise since the dawn of television. As the Net becomes a primary source of news for a growing segment of the world’s population, it presents complex challenges and opportunities for journalists as well as the news audience. Issues addressed by the organization’s activities include editorial integrity, independence, journalistic excellence, freedom of expression and freedom of access.
  • Member of the Knight Foundation advisory board at Indiana University’s School of Journalism, from 1997 – 2001. The board advises the Journalism School on curriculum development and its ability to meet the changing marketplace needs of the marketplace. Other board members include executives and academics from the Washington Post, Microsoft, St. Petersburg Times, New York University and Consumer Reports.
  • Member of the advisory board of New York University’s Center for Publishing’s program in Electronic Publishing, from 2000-2002; NYU’s Center for Publishing provides students and opportunity to receive advanced professional degrees; the advisory board provides assistance on overall strategy and curriculum development.
  • Member of the Board of Directors for The Florence Fund and Tom Paine.com, a non-profit grant making and publishing organization that helps invigorate public debate by assisting interest groups in moving their message to larger audiences from 1999-2002.   • Served as judge for monthly and annual SNDies Website and Interactive Multimedia program sponsored by the Estlow Center at University of Denver and the Society for News Design.
  • Served as mentor and advisor for Franklin D. Roosevelt High School’s winning team in the 2001 New York City / MOUSE Digital Newspaper Contest. The program seeks to teach New York City public high school students writing, journalism, programming and web-design skills in a fun, educational and collegial after-school setting. Each of the students on the winning team received laptop computers.
